Netflix wants to get into video games, according to a new report.
The report from The Information states that Netflix has been in contact with various “veteran game industry executives.”
It goes on to state streaming company is interested in releasing games via a subscription in “bundle” form, similar to Apple Arcade.
When contacted by Polygon, a Netflix spokesperson told the outlet it is “excited” to do “more with interactive entertainment.”
“Our members value the variety and quality of our content,” the spokesperson told Polygon. “It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering — from series to documentaries, film, local language originals, and reality TV.
“Members also enjoy engaging more directly with stories they love — through interactive shows like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild, or games based on Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel, and To All the Boys.
“So we’re excited to do more with interactive entertainment.”
Whether the company will indeed dip its toes further into video games was not confirmed, as you will note, but it sounds like the company is indeed interested. It did, as you know, release games based on the Stranger Things IP. It also released Netflix Infinite Runner, which featured characters from Marco Polo, Narcos, Orange is the New Black, and Stranger Things.
It also has the upcoming Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and then there’s the animated League of Legends series coming to the service this fall, and there’s also the 3D animated Sonic the Hedgehog show Sonic Prime coming in 2022 – and don’t forget about the live-action Assassin’s Creed series in the works with Ubisoft.
Then there’s Beyond Good & Evil, a Splinter Cell anime series from John Wick’s writer coming to Netflix, and the Resident Evil series starring the Wesker kid.
Needless to say, Netflix likes supporting media based on video games.
